A TĀTOU KAUPAPA - Our PRojects

This project focuses on the identification of area-specific solutions to help address catchment-wide concerns about water quality and supply. Through this project, sub-catchment action plans will be developed and delivered in partnership with landowners, care groups, tangata whenua and/or schools.

The action plans will outline a pathway towards improved care of land and waterways in each sub-catchment such as through:

• improved land use practices such as through run-off management, nutrient budgeting and activity alignment with land use capability,
• riparian fencing and planting,
• riparian or wetland restoration, and
• care group formation.

Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council will lead this work for the mid-lower Waiari sub-catchment. Bay of Plenty Regional Council is leading the work for all other areas. A broad range of landowners, tangata whenua, industry and community groups will also be involved.

This project contributes to our aim of taking collective responsibility for improving the health and wellbeing of the Kaituna River and its tributaries.

Planned deliverables include:

• Development and implementation of action plans for Kopuaroa, Waitepuia/ Ford Road and mid-lower Waiari sub-catchments by 30 June 2022.
• Development and implementation of an action plan for Parawhenuamea sub-catchment by 30 June 2025.
• Development and implementation of an action plan for Ōhineangaanga sub-catchments by 30 June 2028.
