The focus of this project is on the building of awareness and knowledge regarding the cumulative impacts of consented water takes and discharges on the health and well-being of the Kaituna catchment.

There are a large number of consented activities for agriculture, forestry, horticulture, industry and urban development within the Kaituna catchments. This includes, but is not limited to the:

• taking of water from rivers, streams and groundwater aquifers, and
• disposal of wastewater and stormwater into waterways, either directly or via wetlands.

Although managed by resource consent, these activities impact the ecological and cultural health of the Kaituna River, and all it sustains.

Regional, city and district councils as well as Te Maru o Kaituna will jointly lead work on this project that contributes to our aim of taking collective responsibility for improving the health and wellbeing of the Kaituna River and its tributaries.

Planned deliverables for 2020-28 include:

• Annual compliance report about consented water takes and discharges.
• Annual reporting by Tauranga City, Western Bay of Plenty District and Rotorua Lakes Councils about urban wastewater and stormwater management.
• Annual reporting by Regional Council about stormwater discharges from Kaituna river and drainage schemes.
• Annual meeting with representatives of the Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes Strategy Group.
